Electoral System

I know that first past the post comes out with a overall income, but lets face it, it is unfair that if the general election outcome is 32% to 30% between the top parties, that the one with 32% of the vote gets 51% of the seats. This is why i think some form of proportional representational voting system should be used. Whether it is an existing one or one to be made. If we want democracy and our voices heard, then it is the only way. Now most of you who are politically awair may tell me that there are faults in PR as well. But this is politics, and infact, not everyones going to agree with me, thats how democracy works, and also there are flaws in every political solution you may come up with. It's all about whether the risk is worth it. And I think any risk is worht taking to ensure democracy. And if my cabinet suggestion is put up, then we have no worry about a government that has to appeal to the party they had to join to become government with an overall majority in the commons. Now thats where another suggestion comes in. If my cabinet proposal doesn't appease you, then if it is the same as it is now I personally think it is better that a government is more democratic and doesn't have an overall majority of the House than have to join up with another to become the government. If they had to have an overall majority then I suggest that the only party that can choose to join up is the one with the most votes. And they can only pick the 2nd party in the running and it is up to the 2 parties whether or not to make a unitary government.

The Commons

The Commons needs to actually spend more time debating and less time arguing. To many times have I switched on to Prime Minsiters Questions and found someone come up with a good question and the prime minsiter shout back how his government did just that little better then they did. A start to change this would be to rebuild parliament in a circle rather then have party members face off with eachother. Another would be my multi party cabinet suggestion. This way government officials and MPs would work together rather then argue. If MPs or an MPs constiuent has an issue to have gone over, the executive would then give it a look rather then say that the MP is wrong just for the fact that he/she is of the opposition.

The Lords

The main thing is that the Lords should stay as a part of the political system, because it has the ability to work. Just not with the hereditary peers. I think the Lords should be the opposite result to a general election. For example, if Labour win an election, then the second placed party gets the majority of the seats in the Lords, equal to what Labour would get in the Commons. An idea instead of that would be that the members of each party have an equal voice in the Lords. So for example, Labour, Conservatives, Liberal Demorcrats and others all would get an equal percentage of seats, depending on how many parties have made it to the commons. Even if a party only has one candidate in the commons, they would have as many members in the lords as the winning party. If a party isn't elected into the commons then they wouldn't make it into the lords. My final alternative is that there is no party representation what so ever. The Lords would be professionals of certain fields of the smartist and influencial minds and personalities in the country. Maybe even foreign candidates could be offered the job. That's another thing, the jobs have to be offered by the executive. Not nesacaraly the Prime Minister, but the government at the time should have the power to choose. My last idea for the Lords is that there should either be equal representation of religious voices in the Lords or none at all. It isn't fair that in an unelected system of government that there is only a voice for christians. There should be a head of the country from every religion in the UK so that every religion has a say. If that is too radical for this government system then I think that there should be no representation at all.

The Executive

I believe that the Bristish Cabinet system should be selected simular to the American system. I.e. The members of the cabinet are selected as profesionals in the particular field, rather than any old party member. Except the American system elects cabinet members who don't even need to be members of a party. I think that the candidates still have to be voted members of parliament, but the prime minister shouldn't be restricted to his/her own party. This is becuase I believe that our form of government (being that the executive, legislature and judiciary are all linked, rather than seperate enterties, as they are in the American system) works best to work with and scrutinise government.

Education

For starters I have a problem with the majority of assesment being mainly exams, becuase not everyone can do exams, even if they know all they need to know, they have a 'mind block' when it comes to the test. I think it should be 50% exams and 50% coursework. That way you get an idea of how the student performs. Also, I think coursework should be done only in school and undersupervision to make sure that none of the students cheat.
I also have a big problem with tuition fees in further education. The government says that they want to encourage more people to go to university and yet they wack a £3000 fee at the potential students. I also hear it may go up to £5000. I think the only way your going to get more people to go to Uni' is if you abolish the fees or at least decrease the fee to a more affordable price.

Taxes

Now I'm not taxed myself becuase I'm still a student and so I am a bit nieve in this area. But wouldn't it be alot easier if the Government taxed a percentage rather then whatever they do now so no one would moan so much about taxing. I know it's a horrible thing to have to go through. But with a certain percentage of the home earners wage, rather then a particualr price, everyone would be eqaul. And the rich wouldn't be getting richer, they'd be on an euqaul playing field thatn everything else. If anything the rich should have to pay more then everyone else.
